Workshop Frisian and Wadden Sea islands

In October 2020, the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat (with the support of Energie Samen, the umbrella organisation of the renewable energy communities in the Netherlands, and the municipality of Texel) hosted two online sessions for the energy transition of the Frisian and Wadden Sea islands.

During the first session (1 October), the focus was on the Dutch Wadden Sea Islands: their efforts and challenges as well as the opportunities to advance their transition to renewable energy.

Capacity-building workshop in Ireland (online)

Over the past two years, the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat – an initiative on behalf of the European Commission – has successfully supported islands all over the EU by building the capacities of islanders and island transition teams through a number of workshops and webinars, and by providing technical support on projects.

The energy transition on the EU islands requires including multiple stakeholders, and engaging decision-makers at all levels together with community representatives, so they can work towards the same goal and vision.

Workshop: Finland - an archipelago in transition

On 7 October 2020, The National Association of Finnish Islands, the Archipelago Sea Unesco Biosphere Reserve and the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat hosted a combined online and physical workshop in Pargas, Finland.

In addition to exchange and learning on technical and financial aspects of the clean energy transition, the workshop drew on Kökar islands’s experiences in adapting the transition teams to suit the Finnish and Aaland context.

Workshop: Culatra, a sustainable energy community

Culatra was one of the six pilot islands during the Clean energy for EU islands pilot phase. In cooperation with Culatra's transition team - including representatives of Algarve University and the NGO Make it better - the Secretariat organised a 2-day workshop covering relevant topics such as electricity generation, storage and distribution, maritime transport, water supply and treatment, waste management and energy efficiency.
