Resilient islands, resilient Europe Under the motto "Resilient islands, resilient Europe", the forum will focus on the governance of the decarbonisation of EU islands and on the alignment of all stakeholders for a just energy transition. First-hand testimonies from the transition teams of the 30for2030 islands will provide key insights to empower islands and their communities through the alignment of stakeholders’ views, priorities, and objectives.

The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat has released an updated version of its Regulatory Inventory, now available on its website.This updated resource provides a clear and accessible overview of the regulatory frameworks shaping the clean energy transition on EU islands.

While islands are particularly vulnerable to climate change, they enjoy a naturally high potential of renewable energy sources to harness. Many islands have abundant renewable energy potential, which can be tapped to lead decarbonisation. However, access to reliable, clean and competitive sources of energy remains a main concern of island communities in the EU. Although it is often technically and financially possible to develop renewable energy projects on islands, legal and regulatory frameworks, whether EU, national, regional or local, are not always fitfor purpose.

In this study, a pre-feasibility assessment and analysis of alternatives and options for a biomass energy plant in Lipari, supplied with the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) from the Aeolian Islands, were performed. The study includes preliminary sizing, cost estimation of the plant, and assessment of the costs and emissions associated with transport and processing. As this is a pre-feasibility, the focus was placed on the key challenges and opportunities of a small-scale biowaste plant.

Battery Energy Storage systems are a critical enabling technology for the transition to a low-carbon energy sector. As renewable energy penetration grows, driven by carbon neutrality targets such as the EU's 2050 objective, the need to store intermittent energy from solar and wind sources becomes increasingly important.

Airborne Wind Energy Systems (AWES) represents a novel approach to renewable power generation by capturing stronger and more consistent winds found at high altitudes well above the reach of traditional wind turbines. These high-altitude winds hold significantly greater energy potential, offering an opportunity to generate electricity more efficiently and in locations where conventional wind infrastructure may not be feasible.

This technical note presents results of the preconstruction visual, acoustic and shadow impact of the Fejø wind farm, located on Fejø island, in Denmark. Overall, 4 wind farm configurations were considered, for a total installed capacity of 2 MW. The WindPRO modules “PHOTOMONTAGE”, “DECIBEL” and “SHADOW” have been used to assess the wind turbine impact on their environment against the Danish regulations and guidelines.

The aim is to create a city where the emphasis shifts from car ownership to mobility options that are shared, electric, and active.

The EU Agenda for Cities offers a strategic vision to empower cities in tackling local challenges, contributing to meeting broader EU goals. It provides a unified framework to strengthen the territorial and urban dimensions of EU policies and streamline existing support for urban areas. Furthermore, it calls for more dialogue with local authorities about their needs and experiences to inform future EU policies and legislation.Cities are crucial hubs for Europe's prosperity and competitiveness, playing a key role in job creation, social inclusiveness, decarbonisation and sustainability.
