Clean energy for EU islands: Hybrid PV and storage plant in Pantelleria Airport

This report explores the potential for integrating PV systems and BESS at Pantelleria Airport. Developing a hybrid PV-BESS plant at Pantelleria Airport represents a pivotal step toward achieving energy independence and sustainability on the island. Pantelleria can significantly reduce its reliance on imported fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and stabilize energy costs.  Given its large, underutilised surfaces, the airport presents a strategic opportunity for a PV plant.

Clean energy for EU islands: Energy efficiency in residential stone buildings

This report explores energy efficiency measures for traditional buildings in Ireland, focusing on the Aran Islands, which feature a rich portfolio of historic stone buildings. It highlights the European Union’s (EU) regulations and directives to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, as well as Ireland’s national policy framework. Key retrofitting measures discussed in the report aim to improve thermal performance while preserving the external appearance of buildings in compliance with conservation regulations.

Clean energy for EU islands: Assessment of the wind power potential on Öland

This report provides an in-depth assessment of wind energy development potential in Öland. It analyzes existing wind energy plans, technological advancements, land use constraints, and wind resource availability to identify priority areas for future wind power projects. First, the technical, cultural and environmental constraints for deploying wind farms are assessed, and a list of priority areas is defined.

Clean energy for EU islands: North Sporades virtual microgrid, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos, Greece

The Northern Sporades are an archipelago in the Aegean Sea along Greece's east coast, northeast of the island of Euboea. It consists of 24 islands, four permanently inhabited islands: Alonnisos, Skiathos, Skopelos, and Skyros. The islands Skiathos, Skopelos, and Alonnisos (forming the North Sporades archipelago) are interconnected, and Skiathos is also interconnected to the mainland.A 150/20kV substation of Skiathos with 2x40/50 MVA rating capacity is connected to the mainland’s high voltage grid with 30km of 150kV underground and submarine cables.

Clean energy for EU islands secretariat takes part in European Energy Communities Facility Strategic Dialogue

The European Energy Communities Facility aims to empower and support the development of emerging energy communities across Europe. Small lump sum grants (45.000 euros) will assist at least 140 energy communities in developing and implement solid business plans for their sustainable energy projects. The first call for applications will be launched in June 2025, and a second call will follow in September 2026.

Determining the Optimal Mix of PV, Wind and Pumped Hydro Storage by 2040 for the Ribeira da Janela Reversible Hydroelectric Power Station (CHR-RJ)

The study assessed the optimal generation sizing to reach 60%, 80% and 95% renewables penetration by 2040. Two different climate years (2015 and 2016) have been assessed in a dispatch model, optimising the OPEX of a system with a fixed installed base combined with an economic model.
