Clean energy for EU islands

Report: Technical Assistance for A Illa de Arousa

This Technical Assistance aims to support the electrification of A Illa de Arousa's port and mussel farming activities. The wind potential and solar potential of the island were analyzed, indicating that a small-scale wind turbine and ground-mounted solar PV system could generate significant electricity. The future energy consumption of the port was estimated, and different charging profiles for the electrified vessels were created.

Report: Technical Assistance for Pantelleria

Pantelleria is an Italian island and commune in the Strait of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, 100 kilometres southwest of Sicily and 60 km east of the Tunisian coast. Administratively, Pantelleria commune belongs to the Sicilian province of Trapani. The objective of this study is to evaluate the best solution for a 7MW solar plant at Pantelleria airport, achieving the highest IRR. The study focuses on providing sufficient information on the solution and thus identifies the highest financial savings over a 20-year period, taking into account the specific costs.

Technology solutions booklet

The Technology solutions booklet provides an overview of energy technologies that are currently commercially available for islands to advance in their clean energy transition. Technologies are grouped per sector: electricity, heating and cooling, transport, and storage. For each technology, a short description is first presented, followed by its pros and cons for its implementation on islands. Finally, island examples are provided to give inspiration and explain how European islands are adopting these technologies in practice.

Do islands need green hydrogen for their clean energy transition?

In this webinar, the experience of islands with hydrogen projects was presented. We first heard about Texel's clean energy transition, and how hydrogen was envisaged as a promising solution but ended up posing certain challenges for the implementation.

We also heard about Orkney's experience with the BIG HIT project, which aims at implementing a fully integrated model of hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilisation for heat, power, and mobility.

Finally, Flexens presented an overview of the hydrogen projects they are involved in on the Åland Islands.

I Fiesta del Autoconsumo

Arousa is a small island of 7km² in the middle of the Ría de Arousa, known for its beautiful landscapes, beaches, nature and rich cultural life. It is connected to the mainland by a 2km long bridge.

Aran Islands

Remoteness, idyllic lifestyle, and unique natural landscapes are some of the common characteristics of islands. The Aran Islands, located on the West coast of Ireland just off Galway, are no exception. Majestic cliffs, Celtic medieval churches and lush green fields crossed by ancient stone walls form part of the rich local culture that makes the Aran Islands an unforgettable experience for anyone who visits them. The three islands that make up the Aran Islands are Árainn (Big Island), Inishmaan (Middle Island) and Inisheer (East Island).
