This report presents a first technical and economic assessment of the possibility of introducing hydrogen-fuelled ferries for transporting passengers and vehicles between the islands of Giglio and Giannutri and the mainland. The technical feasibility study considers both the opportunities of retrofitting existing vessels and introducing new ships’ hulls designed for electrical engines and hydrogen fuel cell equipment.
This report provides an overview of the available hydrogen-based technologies for passengers and RO-PAX ships and then introduces the case study of the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. Based on the analysis of the present service of connecting the islands with the mainland, a potential solution to reduce the consumption of fossil fuel and related emissions is proposed.
The study should support decisions on investment for decarbonising the maritime transport of the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, highlighting costs, barriers and opportunities offered by hydrogen technologies applied to the maritime sector.
