Overview
In Cyprus’s National Plan for Energy and Climate for 2030, the RES-H&C share is expected to increase to 53.6% with additional measures, and to 49.3% in existing measures scenario. The mandatory target set in the revision of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 for the said share of RES, which concerns an annual increase of at least 0.8% in the period 2021 to 2025 and 1.1% in the period 2026 to 2030 of the percentage of RES in in the field of H&C, is achieved in the plans with additional measures.
In the heating-cooling sector, the share of RES in 2021 reached 41.34%, surpassing the indicative path set in the Cyprus’s National Plan for Energy and Climate for 32.6% in 2021. There has also been an increase of 11.12% in relation to the share of RES in sector in 2020 (37.12%). For the heating and cooling sector, Cyprus foresees to achieve its targets by two main technologies, solar thermal and heat pumps.
Cyprus promotes RES H&C mainly through subsidies. The Energy Efficiency - Upgrading of Domestic Buildings 2024 which offers grants for the purchase and installation of solar water heaters, aerothermal, hydrothermal and geothermal heat pumps in the domestic sector. In addition, the Support Scheme for Solar Water Heaters 2024 supports the purchase and installation of solar water heaters in the domestic sector. Moreover, Cyprus building regulation for energy efficiency and for minimum energy requirements are defined for all new and deep renovated buildings as defined from Law 155(1)/2020.
Summary of support schemes
- Subsidy for Energy improvement: The Plan aims at the extensive energy upgrading of existing homes located in areas under the control in the Republic of Cyprus.
- Subsidy scheme for solar hot water production systems in residences : installation or replacement of integrated solar hot water production systems in existing homes where the building permit or urban planning permit was submitted before 31/12/2010.
- RES-H building obligations (Minimum energy efficiency requirements & ΝΖΕΒ): Cyprus has defined the minimum energy requirements for all new and renovated buildings and NZEB.
- Law 107/2022 on The Promotion and Encouragement of the Use of Renewable Energy Sources Law of 2022 which establishes financial support for electricity produced from renewable sources, for the self-consumption of similar electricity, for the use of energy from renewable sources in the heating, cooling and transport sectors.
