Grid connection permit process

Abbreviated form of legal source

S.L. 545.13

Description of the process

  1. Authorization to Construct:
    • Applicants seeking to install a renewable energy system must first obtain authorization from the Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS). This involves submitting an application that includes details about the proposed installation.
  2. Submission to Distribution System Operator (DSO):
    • Once REWS grants authorization, the applicant provides system details to Enemalta plc, Malta's sole DSO.
  3. Grid Connection Study:
    • Enemalta conducts a grid connection study to assess the feasibility and impact of connecting the proposed system to the grid. The cost and duration of this study depend on the installation's size and complexity.
  4. 'No Objection' Document:
    • For systems exceeding 16 Amps per phase, Enemalta issues a 'No Objection' document upon successful completion of the grid connection study. This document is necessary before proceeding with the installation.
  5. Regulatory Clearance and Feed-in Tariff (FiT):
    • After obtaining the 'No Objection' document, the applicant seeks regulatory clearance from REWS, which includes confirmation of the applicable FiT rate.
  6. Meter Installation and Grid Connection:
    • With regulatory clearance, the applicant requests Enemalta to install a photovoltaic (PV) meter and establish the grid connection, enabling the system to commence operation.
