Oinousses is part of the non-interconnected electrical system of Chios, which consists of the Chios, Oinousses, and Psara Islands. Four submarine cables (1x50 Al, 20 kV) connect Oinousses with Chios. The operating voltage in the Oinousses power system is 20 kV.

Oinousses is a small island complex in the North Aegean, located near Chios. It has a rich maritime tradition and a close-knit local community. Despite its small size, Oinousses plays an important role in the region, sharing economic and energy dependencies with Chios and Psara.

The island’s current renewable energy penetration is 17.3%, with this portion of its electricity supply coming from RES as part of the Chios electrical system. Oinousses has an estimated annual electricity demand of 2.9 GWh, while heating and transportation annual energy needs account for 1,193 MWh and 3,400 MWh, respectively.

The vision for Oinousses under the Follower Islands programme is to create a sustainable and resilient energy system that supports local economic growth while reducing environmental impact. The island has already taken steps in this direction by participating in initiatives like the NESOI programme, which developed feasibility studies for energy transition projects, and the Horizon 2020 MUSICA project, which integrates renewable energy with blue economy solutions. Moving forward, Oinousses aims to expand renewable energy infrastructure, implement energy storage solutions, leverage innovative technologies, and promote the electrification of transport to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and enhance energy security for its residents.
