Island facts
The Diapontian Islands, also known as the Diapontia Islands, are a group of Greek islands located in the Ionian Sea, northwest of Corfu. The main inhabited islands in this archipelago are Othoni, Ereikoussa, and Mathraki.
The Diapontian Islands do not have conventional electricity production units or renewable energy sources (RES). Instead, they rely solely on their interconnection with Corfu for electricity supply. Heating on all three islands is primarily achieved using diesel, wood, air conditioning, and resistive heaters. Residents commonly use air conditioning and fans for cooling.
Mathraki is connected to the mainland via Corfu through a medium-voltage submarine cable (3x35 Al) with a nominal voltage of 6.6 kV. This cable is 11.4 km long. Corfu itself is linked to the mainland at the Igoumenitsa region by two high-voltage submarine cables, each with a nominal voltage of 150 kV.
As part of the 30 for 2023 Technical Assistance initiative, the islands of Othoni, Ereikoussa, and Mathraki will develop a Clean Energy Transition Agenda. This agenda involves engaging local stakeholders, collaborating with governments and regulators, and ensuring that the regulatory framework supports the implementation of key projects aimed at achieving 100% renewable energy sources. Planned projects include decarbonizing transport by designing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, promoting electrified public transport, and enhancing building energy efficiency through measures such as insulation, heat pumps, solar water heaters, and rooftop photovoltaic systems (PVs).
Mathraki forms a 30 for 2030 island group together with Othonoi and Ereikoussa.
