Elafonisos is a small island at the southeastern tip of the Peloponnese. Its population is around 700 in winter and doubles in summer. Known for its beautiful beaches, the island attracts many tourists, especially in August. Historically, it had one of the largest fishing fleets in Greece. Elafonisos covers 19 square kilometres and is part of the Laconia region, located near Neapoli to the east and Kythira to the south.

Elafonisos is interconnected to the mainland and Kythira Island through medium-voltage submarine cables, making it part of Greece's national energy grid. The island's energy mix mirrors the national average, with 57% of its electricity supply coming from renewable energy sources (RES), although no RES installations are currently located on the island. The island's annual energy demand is estimated to be around 27 GWh. This encompasses electricity, heating, cooling, and transportation.

Elafonisos' energy transition vision focuses on achieving sustainability, energy efficiency, and reduced carbon emissions while leveraging its connection to the mainland grid. As part of the Follower Islands Programme, the island is working to accelerate its shift to a more sustainable energy model by integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing its carbon footprint. The municipality also implements an Electric Vehicle Charging Plan to promote greener mobility and support environmental goals. Through these efforts, Elafonisos aims to meet the needs of its residents and tourists, support local economic growth, and establish itself as a green energy destination.
