Subsidy (Bonus écologique)

Abbreviated form of legal source(s)

  • Code de l’énergie
  • Décret n° 2024-1084 du 29 novembre 2024

Description of support scheme

The ecological bonus is a financial aid allocated to any purchaser of a vehicle with a CO2 emission rate less than or equal to 20 g/km (electric, hydrogen or rechargeable hybrid) respecting the conditions set out in Art. D251-1 et seq. of the Energy Code (Code de l’énergie). The ecological bonus is a purchase aid, which favors new vehicles with a low carbon footprint. Since 2 December  2024, only new passenger cars are eligible for the ecological bonus and must meet certain criteria. In addition, since 10 October 2023, passenger cars must meet a minimum environmental score. A natural person can only benefit from a bonus per vehicle category once every three years. Residents  in an overseas department or region are entitled to an increase of the ecological bonus by 1,000 euros, provided that the new vehicle is being driven within six months of its acquisition.

Amount

For the acquisition of a private car type vehicle the amount of aid is set at 27% of the acquisition cost including tax, increased where applicable by the cost of the battery if it is leased, within the limit of:

4,000 euros if the vehicle is acquired or leased by a natural person whose reference tax income per share is less than or equal to 16,300 euros,
3,000 euros if the vehicle is acquired or leased by a natural person whose reference tax income per share is greater than 16,300 euros and less than or equal to 26,200 euros,
2,000 euros if the vehicle is acquired or leased by a natural person whose reference tax income per share is greater than 26,200 euros.

Addressees

The addressees are purchasers of new clean energy vehicles.

Procedure

The amount of aid is either deducted from the invoice by the seller or paid to the buyer after the purchase by the Fund for acquisition of clean vehicles (Fonds d'aide à l'acquisition de véhicules propres), managed by the Agence de services et de paiement (ASP). In this case, the request for payment of the aid is made via a website dedicated to the conversion premium.
