Hellenic Mediterranean University is located in Crete and consists of 5 Schools with 11 currently operating Departments. The Mechanical Engineering Department participates in the European Commission's Secretariat as Associated Partner, aiming to provide consulting and technical support and advice for the insular communities which wish to make their step towards their energy transition. Extensive work has been accomplished during the last 25 years on scientific topics related with the introduction to Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and the Rational Use of Energy particularly in insular territories. This work can be categorized in:

a. the study of the available RES potential in an insular territory

b. computational simulation of existing thermal power plants, calculation of characteristic evaluation indicators

c. the design, the siting, the sizing and the computational simulation of RES power production technologies (e.g. wind parks, photovoltaic stations), hybrid power plants consisting of a RES production technology and a storage plant (pumped hydro strorage, compressed air energy storage, electrochemical storage devices etc) and combined heat and power plants

d. the contribution to the capacity building of local communities and the cultivation of "energy culture"

e. the support of local communities to gain their share on the exploitation of the locally available RES potential and claim sustainable development.
