On 25 November, Eurelectric and the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat co-hosted a webinar that brought together 60 participants to discuss challenges and solutions for enhancing grid systems on islands and non-interconnected regions. The webinar provided critical insights and practical examples, highlighting the importance of tailored approaches to support the energy transition.
Eurelectric presented findings from its Grids4Speed report, which identifies regulatory and technical changes necessary to meet the EU's REPowerEU targets. The report emphasised the need for significant investments in grid infrastructure while proposing efficiency measures to reduce overall costs. For islands, the focus is on digitalisation, streamlined permitting procedures, and developing a skilled workforce to manage the transition.
The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat shared the results of its study on non-interconnected islands, detailing the preparation process, challenges faced, and key recommendations for improvement. A proposed Pact for Island Grids aims to create a collaborative framework for grid operators, regulators, and stakeholders. This initiative seeks to push for tailored regulations and secure additional funding for island energy systems.
The webinar also featured speakers from Distribution System Operators (DSO) of islands incorporating case studies illustrating successful renewable energy integration on islands. The Azores demonstrated the role of storage solutions like batteries and hydro in maintaining grid stability while increasing the share of renewables. French islands such as Corsica and Guadeloupe highlighted the importance of regulatory frameworks and testing grid code requirements to ensure secure and stable energy systems. Similarly, Italian islands showcased shared challenges like grid congestion while offering solutions like battery energy storage systems.
Tadgh O'Briain, Deputy Head of Unit, DG ENER, concluded the session by reiterating the European Commission's commitment to ensuring all grid-connected customers benefit from the energy transition. The Commission emphasised the urgent need for €500 billion to upgrade and expand Europe’s grid infrastructure. Upcoming initiatives, including the Citizens Energy Package, the Electrification Strategy, and the Pact for Island Grids, aim to address these challenges at the European level.
This webinar highlighted the need for collaboration among stakeholders, tailored solutions for island grids, and robust investments to accelerate the clean energy transition. The insights and initiatives discussed pave the way for more resilient and sustainable energy systems across Europe.
