Exemplary role of public authorities I (environmental standards for government vehicles)

Abbreviated form of legal source(s)

● Ordinance 2020:486
● Ordinance 2017:1334

Summary

Most government vehicles – with some exceptions – are required to comply with the environmental criteria set out in the Ordinance 2017:1334 for vehicles eligible for the environmental “bonus” (arts. 5 and 6, 2020:486). Low-emissions vehicles, such as EVs and hybrids, are eligible.
All authorities are required to report to the Swedish Transport Agency about their purchases annually (art 11 2020:486). The Transport Agency is in charge of the supervision of the obligations set out in the Ordinance 2020:486 (art 12–13).
The ordinance 2020:486 also includes other criteria for vehicles intended for government use, such as higher than usual safety standards.

There is also a climate bonus according to the Ordinance 2017:134 which aims to promote increased sales and use of new cars with a low climate impact. The vehicles must fulfill certain criteria in order to be eligible for the bonus (art 5 and 6 Ordinance 2017:1334)

Addressees

The regulation does not apply to some vehicle categories, such as emergency vehicles, vehicles used by the armed forces, foreign authorities, and some branches of the police forces (art 2 Ordinance 2020:486).
