Grid connection permit process

Abbreviated form of legal source

Electricity Act 1998

Description of the process

The connection process for renewable energy plants goes as follows:
• The plant operator applies to the grid operator
• The grid operator is contractually obligated to make a connection offer
• The grid operator and plant operator come to an agreement on access and connecteion. The grid may be extended or developed further if necessary.
• The plant will then be connected to the grid.
The connection of the power plant will be done within a reasonable period of time (art. 23 (3) Electricity Act). In the case of offshore wind projects, the connection to the grid will be granted through the Dutch Government, who will base their decision on the EIA of the project.
