Summary

Malta supports the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) through a dedicated residential charging service offered by Enemalta plc. This scheme provides preferential electricity rates for EV owners during specific off-peak periods and supports the installation of a dedicated EV meter at home. It is part of Malta’s broader strategy to decarbonize transport and reduce peak demand stress on the national grid.

  • Off-Peak Charging Rates:
EV owners are charged a fixed rate of €0.1298 per unit (kWh) when charging their vehicles during designated off-peak periods:
    • 00:00 – 06:00 hrs
    • 12:00 – 16:00 hrs
    • All day Sunday
  • Standard Rates Outside Off-Peak Hours:
EV charging during peak hours is billed at the household’s regular electricity tariff bands.
  • Separate Metering:
A dedicated EV meter is installed to separately measure electricity consumption for vehicle charging.
  • Installation and Monthly Fees:
    • Installation Fee:
      • Single Phase: €50
      • Three Phase: €80
    • Monthly Service Charge:
      • Single Phase: €4/month
      • Three Phase: €6/month
  • Time-of-Use Automation: The system is equipped with a timer mechanism that ensures charging occurs only during approved off-peak hours to benefit from the discounted rate.
  • How to Apply: EV owners can submit an application form available on Enemalta’s website, and Enemalta technicians will install and configure the system accordingly.
