Description of support scheme

KfW supports the deployment of electricity generating plants using geothermal and biomass though a combination of subsidies and low-interest loans.

Amount

The amount of the loan is up to EUR 25 million per project (80% of the invested sum for deep geothermal energy). The yearly interest rate starts at 1.03 %.
For biomass plants, EUR 40 per kW capacity can be granted as a repayment bonus. For deep geothermal energy, the possible repayment bonuses are split up into different categories that must be fulfilled. A repayment bonus is a reduction of loan that has to me repaid and can be granted after the completion of work.

Addressees

Applicants can be private companies, private persons, agricultures, public organisations, municipalities, municipal companies, civil organisations or energy contractors.
SMEs can benefit from an increase of 10 % of the loan and subsidy.

Procedure

Applicants can prepare the application via an online tool on the website. Then, they must find a financing partner. The bank administers the KFW loan (except for municipalities). The repayment bonus can be requested after the installation of the plant.
