Description of the process

There is a so-called wind power compensation area in the Western coast of Finland, where onshore wind projects are exempted from the Defence Forces consultation as the area has been pre-mapped for wind power production purposes. Instead, the operator of each wind turbine is obliged to pay a fee to the Energy Authority. The fee is paid in instalments in the course of five consecutive years (arts. 6-7, Act 490/2013).
