Island facts
Antiparos is a small rocky island in the Cyclades of Greece. It is located just under a mile from Paros, which is connected by a local ferry. The island is renowned for its rich historical and archaeological significance, with notable sites, including the ancient settlement on the nearby islet of Saliagos and the uninhabited island of Despotiko.
Antiparos is working towards an energy transition to become a self-sustaining renewable energy hub. The island follows the mainland's energy mix, with a current renewable energy penetration of 57%. Its total annual energy demand is estimated at 38 GWh, covering electricity, heating/cooling, and transportation needs.
The vision for the energy transition on Antiparos is to transform the island into a self-sufficient, renewable energy hub, reducing carbon emissions and ensuring affordable, clean energy for both residents and visitors. In line with this vision, the municipality participated in the NESOI program, focusing on energy transition projects such as hybridizing the ferry's propulsion system, installing electric vehicle charging stations, and electrifying the municipal fleet, all powered by solar PV stations. Through these initiatives, Antiparos, aims to reduce fossil fuel reliance, increase renewable energy use, and support sustainable tourism development while preserving the island's traditional charm. The island's efforts are further supported by the Follower Islands Program, which fosters the sharing of knowledge and best practices among islands, ensuring a sustainable energy future.
