EU-INDIA Collaboration for smarter energy systems: The RΕ-EMPOWERED & SUSTENANCE Projects

In collaboration with the SUSTENANCE H2020 project, RE-EMPOWERED is hosting the session "EU-INDIA Collaboration for smarter energy systems: The RΕ-EMPOWERED & SUSTENANCE Projects" in the framework of the #MedPower conference! India is undertaking ambitious policies for the energy transition while striving to increase electricity access and supply reliability. The country has become one of the largest PV markets globally, with large-scale solar farms and rooftop installations growing rapidly, while it is also a major player in wind energy and biomass.

#CE4EUislands webinar: Grids Fit for Decarbonisation: A Deep Dive into EU Islands Systems and Solutions

Join us for a powerful event exploring the future of Europe’s island energy grids!Kicking off with insights from MEPs and leading experts, we’ll explore the significant investment needs for resilient, sustainable grids. Zsuzsa Cseko from Eurelectric will present Grids for Speed, a comprehensive overview of the challenges and strategies for integrating renewable energy across EU islands. Lucija Rakocevic (Clean energy for EU islands secretariat) will unveil the Pact for Island Grids, focusing on fostering energy transitions in remote and non-interconnected communities.

#CE4EUIslands Workshops in Brussels

Within the technical assistance provided to the 30 for 2030 islands and islands groups, special attention is paid to providing the local teams with tools and knowledge to support their development of RE and EE projects. With this objective, the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat is organizing a series of 20 workshops over the course of three years to promote capacity building on relevant topics. The workshops are held in person on selected islands and involve representatives from the island transition teams of a varying number of interested islands.

Extended deadline - Join the Follower Islands Programme

The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat is excited to announce a new opportunity for islands: the Follower Islands programme. This call invites islands to apply and participate in the ambitious "30 for 2030" initiative to fast-track their decarbonisation plans and learn from the 30 pioneering islands. Applicants can select key learning topics for capacity-building activities, present their energy plans and visions for expert assessment and improvement, and choose a project for peer-to-peer coaching from experienced islands leading the way in clean energy.

Study on connection policies and management of energy systems under conditions of asynchronous generation in the non-interconnected islands

In 2021 and 2022 the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat (the secretariat) conducted a study on the regulatory barriers affecting the clean energy transition of islands. This provided significant insights into the operation of the islands’ electricity systems and formulated recommendations to overcome existing challenges. Grid constraints and the lack of security of supply were identified as two of the key barriers to the decarbonisation of EU islands’ energy systems.

Clean energy for EU islands: Addressing Barriers to Renewable Energy Integration

A recent study conducted by the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat has shed light on challenges facing the electricity systems of EU islands in their transition to renewable energy. The study provides recommendations and best practice examples for achieving the security of supply needed for sustainable economic development. In 2021 and 2022, the secretariat embarked on an in-depth analysis of the regulatory barriers hampering the clean energy transition on EU islands.

Sun4All - Fleshing out energy community legislation in EU Member states for a fair energy transition

This policy brief highlights the role of national governments in fostering the development of energy communities in their territories overall, and in particular on how to support energy communities in fulfilling their potential for social cohesion. The policy brief first reviews the transposition process of the first-generation EU legislation on energy communities and key aspects of it. It then outlines the new provisions that Member states will need to adopt in the coming years as part of the second-generation EU legislation on energy communities.

Energy Efficiency and Resilient Home Building in Sint Maarten: A Model for Sustainable Development

The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat is delighted to highlight the innovative practices in energy-efficient buildings in Sint Maarten, as shared by local experts. These practices exemplify resilience in natural disasters and set a benchmark for sustainable construction.Sint Maarten has faced severe hurricanes and has embraced best practices in constructing resilient homes. These strategies were developed with various types of homeowners in mind, including those in social housing, the middle class, and the upper class.

Clean energy for EU islands workshop: Financing mechanisms for islands' decarbonisation projects with a focus on shared ownership schemes

Within the technical assistance provided to the 30 for 2030 islands and islands groups, special attention is placed on giving the local teams with tools and knowledge to support them in developing RE and EE projects. With this objective, the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat is organising a series of 20 workshops over three years, to promote capacity building on relevant topics. The workshops are held in person on selected islands, and involve representatives from the island transition teams of a varying number of interested islands.
