Decarbonising road transport - off-grid Scottish Islands

This study evaluates the environmental impact of different vehicle types—internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, and electric vehicles (EVs)—on off-grid Scottish islands. Using life cycle assessment (LCA), it compares emissions from vehicle production, operation, and end-of-life phases. The report presents two decarbonization scenarios and highlights the benefits of transitioning to EVs, especially when powered by local renewable energy. It also considers the unique logistical and infrastructural challenges of island transport systems and offers tailored recommendations for sustainable mobility solutions.
