Decarbonising maritime transport - Off-grid Scottish Islands

This study investigates options for decarbonising small boat transport on off-grid Scottish islands. It reviews current maritime energy use and evaluates alternative propulsion technologies, including hybrid diesel-electric systems and fully electric boats. The report compares these technologies based on environmental impact, economic feasibility, and technological maturity. It includes case studies from Norway, Denmark, and the UK to illustrate successful implementations of battery-powered ferries and smaller vessels. The findings support the development of tailored recommendations for transitioning island maritime transport to cleaner, more sustainable systems.
