Sulev Alajõe, Directing Manager, Estonian Islands Energy Agency, discusses the significant energy sector changes facing the islands of Saaremaa and Ruhnu. With a keen interest in offshore wind energy investments, the islands aim to harness these opportunities to develop local industries based on green energy. Alajõe emphasises the importance of engaging local communities to avoid the "Not In My Back Yard" (NIMBY) effect and build trustworthy communication. He highlights the goal of decarbonising transportation, particularly the reliance on ferries and aviation, by collaborating with the national government on new solutions. Additionally, Alajõe mentions the integration of social care with demand-based transportation and exploring off-grid systems for remote areas through the Property Island programme.

Saarema and Ruhnu are part of the 30 for 2030 call that aims to support islands in becoming 100% renewable by 2030.
