RES-E grid

Overview of grid

The grid connection procedure is currently defined by the ‘Enduring Connection Policy’ (ECP). Generation is dispatched at certain levels to ensure the efficient and secure operation of the electricity system. Eirgrid publishes several documents regarding grid development.

Connection to the grid

The grid connection procedure is currently defined by the ‘Enduring Connection Policy’ (ECP). CRU issues a decision that supports Eirgrid and ESB Networks to issue the terms and conditions for grid connection. Currently, the second ECP (ECP-2) is in place.

Use of the grid

All generators above a certain size threshold, including renewable generation units, respond to dispatch instructions from EirGrid and SONI, the national Market Operator and System Operator. Dispatch instructions are sent on a merit order basis in which generation from renewable energy sources is assigned priority grid access. In the case where system security is compromised, the power output of generators may be constrained up or down (deviation from the planned market schedule) or curtailed (for wind power only – deviation down).

Grid development

Eirgrid publishes annually ‘All Island Transmission Forecast Statement’, which analyses how the transmission grid will develop and describes the reinforcement works to be implemented.
