Island facts
Based on 2022 data, the annual power demand of Astypalea amounts to about 7GWh. Currently, only about 8% of the demand is covered by RES (solar energy) with the main load being served by diesel units. This implies a weighted average generation cost of about 523€ per MWh. Peak demand, observed during summer due to high tourism activity, lies around 3 MW.
“Astypalea Smart and Sustainable Island (ASSI)”, a breakthrough innovation project with the collaboration of the Municipality, the Greek state and Volkswagen Group was launched in 2020, envisaging full electrification of the island’s transport system, achieving a 100% decarbonization by 2050.
As part of this project, following a tender, the installation of a hybrid RES station was awarded to PPCR in 2023. The project will be completed in 2 phases. In the first phase, a solar panel station of 3.5 MW coupled with 10 MWh batteries will cover 61,2% of the island's power demand.
The projects/activities with the highest potential under the 30 for 2030 call are:
- Development of a Microgrid in Maltezana settlement
- Full electrification of land transport, with V2G services
- Development of a smart marina, with 20 kW of PVs and batteries and electrification of tourist boats
