Island facts
Prangli is the northernmost island of Estonia with a permanent population. It situates in the gulf of Finland in the Baltic Sea. The island's year-round population is about 75 inhabitants and about 200-250 people are living here during the summer season.
Prangli is connected to the mainland by a ferry that leaves from the port of Kelnase to Leppneeme, which is a 30-min drive away from Estonia's capital Tallinn city centre. Tourism is the main economic activity on the island: Prangli is more and more popular destination for both Estonians and foreigners who seek an adventure outside of Tallinn. In the summertime, about 30.000 tourists visit the island in total: by ferry and by private boats and yachts.
The island’s only energy source is currently a generator fuelled by diesel fuel. Hence, Prangli’s energy security is strongly dependent on the ferry connection. In the past, Prangli’s electricity grid was connected to the mainland through a submarine cable; however, the cable was damaged and the connection was never reinstalled.
Prangli would like to evaluate the renewable energy potential on the island to stop its dependency on fossil fuels.
