Within the technical assistance provided to the 30 for 2030 islands and island groups, special attention is placed on giving the local teams the tools and knowledge to support them in developing RE and EE projects. With this objective, the Clean energy for EU islands secretariat is organising a series of 20 workshops over three years to promote capacity building on relevant topics.
The workshops are held in person on selected islands and involve representatives from the island transition teams of a varying number of interested islands. A knowledge-sharing strategy is envisioned after each workshop for all the 30 for 2030 islands and island groups to benefit from all the discussions taking place. This workshop, which focuses on the topic of "Sustainable marine transport and the role of ports in decarbonising energy systems ", is part of this series.
Marine transport is a critical component of mobility systems on European islands. Ferries, ports, and recreational boats often represent significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and noise. At the same time, island contexts provide unique opportunities to pilot solutions such as ferry electrification, hybrid propulsion, and integrated port energy systems.
This workshop aims to bring together island representatives, researchers, and practitioners to exchange experiences on the decarbonisation of marine transport. The focus will be on practical solutions that islands are already exploring or deploying, particularly in relation to ferry electrification, port infrastructure, and the interaction between ports and island communities.
The workshop will combine expert and island inputs with interactive discussions. The objective is not only to present projects but to facilitate peer learning among islands and identify practical steps islands can take to accelerate marine transport decarbonisation.
