This report analyses the PV potential in the administrative territory of the Municipality of Mörbylånga, on the island of Öland. Its results are supposed to support the preparation of a “Solar Energy Development Plan” by the Municipality itself.

In particular, the report develops an estimation of the ground-mounted PV potential, in view of the different existing environmental constraints. On top of that, it also gives an overview of the available potential on rooftops. All the results are to be intended as theoretical potential, aimed at supporting the elaboration of municipal policies for the exploitation of part of it.

The estimation of the ground-mounted PV potential was performed in view of the local environmental constraints and protected cultural sites, as well as of the technical restrictions related to the terrain and land use. Given the significant impact of the cultural heritage layers, two scenarios were generated in this regard, one of which does not consider the cultural heritage constraints. The resulting areas were then classified and scored based on their proximity to the HV substations. The potential of rooftop PV was assessed based on an available layer, including the footprint of buildings, and a classification based on the building types and functionality.

With a gross total electrical consumption in Mörbylånga of approximately 181 GWh/year (reference year: 2022) and a specific production of PV plants estimated in approx. 1 130 kWh/kWp/year, and in consideration of the results achieved in the estimation of the technical potential, the exploitation of a small part of the overall PV potential would enable the achievement of ambitious renewable energy shares in the electricity mix.
