A new video from the Municipality of Pantelleria highlights how the island is transforming local resources into lasting benefits for its community and future generations. Through a series of everyday stories, the film showcases how renewable energy, sustainable mobility, water management and circular resource use are helping build a more resilient future for the island.
The video opens with Mayor Fabrizio D’Ancona, who conveys a simple but powerful message: islands must make the most of the resources they have. It then turns to Lorenzo, Pantelleria’s young “baby Mayor”, setting the tone for a story that looks above all to the future and to the generations who will inherit the island. Water, wind and solar energy are presented not only as natural assets, but as key components of Pantelleria's long-term sustainability strategy.
The film highlights a range of initiatives that are already making a difference on the island. More efficient public lighting, responsible waste management practices, renewable energy installations and electric buses demonstrate how sustainability measures can improve daily life while reducing environmental impacts. Renewable energy is a particular focus, with Pantelleria harnessing both solar and wind power to strengthen its energy resilience and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.
Pantelleria has long been an active member of the Clean Energy for EU Islands community, sharing its experience and inspiring other islands working towards a sustainable energy future. Its journey demonstrates how local action, combined with a clear vision and community commitment, can turn island challenges into opportunities for innovation and resilience.
The video was presented at the event celebrating the results of Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) "Green Islands" programme and concludes with a message that resonates far beyond Pantelleria: programmes and funding mechanisms may come to an end, but the investments made and the impact they generate remain. As the Mayor reminds viewers, the energy transition is ultimately about turning today's investments into lasting change and creating a better future for the generations that will call the island home tomorrow.
