The European Commission has adopted a new strategic vision for the EU’s outermost regions, including the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, recognising their strategic importance for Europe’s resilience, competitiveness and global reach. The new approach acknowledges both the unique challenges these territories face and their significant potential to contribute to Europe’s sustainable future.
Many outermost regions and islands continue to face high energy costs and dependence on imported fossil fuels. At the same time, they have abundant renewable energy resources, putting them in a strong position to lead the transition to cleaner, more resilient energy systems. The Commission’s new strategy highlights the importance of accelerating the deployment of renewable energy, strengthening energy security and supporting sustainable local development.
For the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat, the strategy reinforces the growing recognition of islands as pioneers of the energy transition. Through technical assistance, capacity-building activities and knowledge exchange, the Secretariat supports island communities in developing and implementing practical pathways towards decarbonisation and greater energy independence.
As Europe advances its clean energy ambitions, islands and outermost regions are increasingly demonstrating how local renewable resources, community engagement and innovative energy solutions can deliver tangible benefits for citizens while contributing to broader EU climate and energy goals.
