Green Salina Energy Days highlights clean energy Solutions for the Aeolian Islands

Green Salina Audience

The Clean energy for EU islands secretariat participated in the Green Salina Energy Days, bringing together local stakeholders, experts and island communities to discuss sustainable energy solutions and the future of the Aeolian Archipelago.

During a session moderated by Enrico Giglio, Riccardo Novo from the secretariat presented ongoing technical support activities for the Aeolian Islands. The presentation focused on the Technical Assistance provided through the Clean energy for EU islands initiative. The study explores how locally available organic waste streams could be transformed into a valuable energy resource, helping the islands reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels while improving waste management practices. The assessment examines the technical and economic viability of a biomass facility that could contribute to the islands' energy transition and circular economy objectives.

The discussion generated strong interest among participants, highlighting the importance of integrated approaches that combine renewable energy production, waste valorisation and local economic development in island contexts.

The Green Salina Energy Days provided an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge, strengthen collaboration with local stakeholders and showcase how tailored technical assistance can support islands in advancing their clean energy ambitions.

A slide presented during the Green Salina Energy Days illustrates the treatment and valorisation of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (FORSU) as part of the pre-feasibility study for a biomass plant in the Aeolian Archipelago.
