Grid connection permit process - Electricity

Abbreviated form of legal source

Electricity Act 1998

Description of the process

For consumers and prosumers

  • The consumer or prosumer applies to the grid operator for a connection up to a connection of 3x80A (55 KW) the grid operator is legally obligated to make a connection offer in line with the request.
  • The tariff for the connection is authorised by the ACM (the Dutch regulatory authority)
  • The consumer or prosumer will be connected to the grid within 18 weeks.

For larger power plant operators the connection process for renewable energy plants goes as follows:

  • The plant operator applies to the grid operator
  • The grid operator is legally obligated to make a connection offer
  • The grid operator and plant operator come to an agreement on access and connection.
  • The grid may be extended or developed further if necessary.
  • The plant will then be connected to the grid.
  • The connection of the power plant will be done within a reasonable period of time (art. 23 (3) Electricity Act). In the case of offshore wind projects, the connection to the grid will be granted through the Dutch Government, who will base their decision on the EIA of the project.
    • A solar power plant, profiting from a subsidy will be connected at 50% of its peak power.
